You Don’t Have to Be in Academia to Be in the Room

Scholar Hour is for anyone who has a thirst for knowledge, not just academics. We explore research as a living practice, grounded in care, creativity, and collective wisdom. Whether you're working on a project or holding a question close, there’s space here for deep thought and meaningful exchange.

Please note: Scholar Hours do not take place in December due to the Data & Dissemination Summit. For the two months where speakers have not yet been confirmed, a TBA placeholder will be listed until details are finalized.

Dirty South Feminism

Dr. Adeerya Johnson is an Associate Curator at the Museum of Pop Culture and the scholar who coined the term Dirty South Feminism. This framework centers the often-overlooked contributions of Black women in southern hip-hop by challenging histories that have prioritized male-dominated and hypermasculine narratives. Through lyrics, rhyme, and dance, Dirty South Feminism highlights how Black women’s agency, performance, and regional identity reshape representations of Black womanhood and girlhood in southern hip-hop culture

Gothic Black Feminism

Gothic Black Feminism, coined by Monyae Kerney, offers a framework that allows Black womxn to confront oppression without the demand for hope, resistance, or perpetual strength. By centering mourning, grief, rest, and realistic pessimism, this work challenges survival-based expectations and creates space for Black womxn to simply be amid enduring structural harm.

We encourage you to read their article entitled " Of Madness and Murder: A Gothic Black Feminist Autoethnography of Mental Illness in Academia" before joining this session.
